The United States in the Gulf

The United States occupies three roles in this system at once, and they are not easily separated. It is a belligerent: the campaign that began on 28 February 2026 had struck more than ten thousand targets in Iran by 25 March, according to the Congressional Research Service. It is the security partner whose forces are hosted at Al Udeid in Qatar, at the Fifth Fleet's home in Bahrain and at the logistics hub in Kuwait — arrangements that predate the war by decades. And it is the author of the sanctions architecture and of the naval measures applied to Iranian exports. No account of Gulf security works without it, and the module carries all three roles rather than choosing one.

The basing arrangements, and what Vigil records about them

United States forces are hosted in Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait under publicly documented bilateral arrangements. Vigil records that those arrangements exist, with whom, and since when. It carries no facility detail, no unit information, no capability, no strength and no disposition, because the schema has no fields for any of them and none will be added. The arrangements are authored as relationships in P2.

An acknowledged civilian strike

A Tomahawk strike on a school in Minab on 28 February 2026 killed 168 people, mostly children. A preliminary investigation found the United States responsible and attributed the strike to outdated targeting information. This is a US-acknowledged responsibility rather than an Iranian allegation, and the module carries it as such.

Contested claims run both ways

After the exchange of 1–2 September 2026 the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed a large number of American personnel killed in Jordan; two US officials told Reuters initial assessments showed no American casualties. Both are claims and the module publishes them as a contradiction rather than resolving it. The same rule applies to every party in this system.
