Summary

The United States Navy's Fifth Fleet and the multinational Combined Maritime Forces are headquartered in Bahrain under a publicly documented bilateral arrangement of long standing. This is a diplomatic fact about an agreement between two states, and that is the whole of what Vigil records: the type is named for the arrangement rather than for the presence precisely so that it cannot become a description of forces. The relationship persisted through the 2026 war, during which Bahraini territory was struck and Iran's army claimed drone attacks on Bahraini radar installations and an airbase on 1 September 2026.

Why it matters

Bahrain's hosting arrangement is the reason a small state with the smallest hydrocarbon output in the system sits at the centre of its maritime security architecture. It also explains the exposure: hosting the naval command of a belligerent places Bahraini territory inside the war.
