Understand conflicts beyond the news cycle.

Vigil connects current developments to the actors, institutions, forces, geography and pressures that shape what happens next.

Choose how to use Vigil.

One corpus, four ways in. Read the analysis, inspect the system, start from geography, or follow what could change the assessment.

The four open the same records, and you can move between them: a Note opens its connected objects, an Explore object leads back to the written record, a Map marker opens the standing record behind it, and a Watch question links to the system and the analysis it rests on.

Analytical NoteStrategic context · Ukraine–Russia

Operation Vivaldi began before the advance. It moved a sector, not the war

Between late May and mid-October 2026 Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps retook a string of villages north of Lyman. The advance was the last stage of a longer process — a sector stabilised, a command reorganised, an operation kept off the map, Russian supply and drones struck first. Its effects reached beyond the ground taken. The eastern front around it is still a war of attrition.

How Vigil works

  1. 01

    Vigil records what changed

Every published area is reviewed on its stated cadence — weekly — and the findings are published as a dated brief, including the weeks where the finding is that nothing material changed.

  2. 02

It connects that change to the standing system

A development is linked back to the actors, relationships, forces, geography, logistics, economic channels, humanitarian conditions, campaigns and events the area already runs through — so it is read against the system it enters rather than on its own.

  3. 03

It shows what the assessment rests on

Sources, dates, confidence grades, claim states, stated information gaps and review status travel with the record and the assessment — including where Vigil does not know.

When an unresolved question could materially change an assessment, Vigil carries it forward in Watch: a standing question, the observable evidence that would move it, and a dated record of what each review found.

What each of those terms means is defined in the methodology; how the work is produced, reviewed and published is set out in the editorial process.

What a published claim carries

What each term means is defined in the methodology; how the work is produced and reviewed is set out in the editorial process.

  • Sources are traceable

Standing records, brief items, Notes and Watch questions cite registered sources; a citation that is not in the registry fails the build.

  • Confidence is graded and shown

High, moderate or low — with a note saying what the grade rests on, and never a substitute for the evidence itself.

  • Dates stay distinct

Publication, assessment and review dates mean different things and are kept apart; a date is shown only where the record itself authors it.

  • Corrections stay public

Material errors are corrected in place and logged with a date, never quietly edited away.

  • Operational detail is excluded by design

No current positions, strengths, movements, routes or targeting detail — the content model has no fields for them.

  • Coverage follows a stated cadence

Each published area is reviewed weekly and receives a dated brief; a quiet review says so explicitly.
