Notable history

Oman does not fit the Gulf pattern and its armed forces should not be read as though it did. The Sultanate borders the Strait of Hormuz — the outbound traffic separation lane runs through Omani territorial water — maintains working relations with Iran that no other Gulf state has, and has served as the channel for talks between Washington and Tehran across four decades. Its military exists to defend that position rather than to project from it. When Iran announced a Persian Gulf Strait Authority in May 2026, Oman rejected it alongside the other Gulf states, which is the clearest available statement of where the Sultanate's neutrality stops.

Strengths

A geographic position at the strait that no other Arab state holds, and a diplomatic role that gives Oman standing with both sides of a war in which everyone else has had to choose.

Limitations

A small force with limited capacity relative to the water it borders, and a strategic role that depends on not being drawn in. Its co-riparian status at Hormuz is a legal and geographic fact owned by this module's maritime records, not a military capability, and nothing here should be read as describing what Omani forces do in the strait.
