In brief
A navigation grouping and an institution, not a command over forces: the GCC's joint military body in Riyadh, whose member states' forces each remain under their own national command — a distinction the current war has made visible.

Broad area of activity
The territory and airspace of the six GCC members
Notable history
The Gulf states have had a joint force since 1982 and a joint command since 2021, when the Peninsula Shield Force was renamed the Unified Military Command at the Al-Ula summit. It has a headquarters in Riyadh and it runs exercises — the Gulf Shield exercise concluded in Saudi Arabia in January 2026 with GCC air and air-defence forces taking part. What it does not have is operational command of anyone's forces. Reporting through the current war describes the six states as lacking a shared air picture, a joint early warning system and common rules of engagement, and the pursuit of exactly those things as an active agenda rather than an existing capability. That gap between an institution and a command is the record's whole point.
Strengths
A standing institutional forum, a permanent headquarters and a regular exercise programme — the machinery through which integration would happen if the member states decided to integrate.
Limitations
It is not an operational command and this module does not present it as one. Its members' forces answer to six separate governments whose responses to the current war have differed materially, and the assessments describing the absence of a shared air picture are analytical claims this module carries rather than facts it has verified from the states themselves. Its inclusion in this atlas records that the institution exists, which is a smaller and more accurate statement than showing a Gulf military bloc.
