Summary

The relationship this record describes is the reduced one: after the January 2016 attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran the UAE downgraded ties while maintaining diplomatic representation, where Saudi Arabia and Bahrain severed theirs outright. That downgraded relationship persisted for a decade. On 1 March 2026 — the day after the strike campaign opened and as Iranian missiles and drones began arriving on Emirati territory — the UAE closed its embassy in Tehran. Vigil records this as a suspension rather than a termination: an embassy closure withdraws the channel without formally ending the relationship, and no announcement dissolving relations has been read.

Why it matters

The UAE absorbed the largest share of Iranian strikes of any Gulf state and responded by hardening rather than hedging. The embassy closure is the clearest single marker of that shift, and it separates the Emirati response from the Saudi, Qatari and Omani ones — which is why this module refuses to treat the Gulf states as holding one position toward Iran.
