Notable history
Nearly moribund by 2012, rebuilt after 2021 with Russian-delivered Su-25s, L-39s and helicopters and Turkish Bayraktar TB2s — in service from 2023 — later joined by the heavier Akıncı from November 2024, which provided the decisive fires for the 2023 Kidal campaign and the strike capability since. A further Akıncı batch was delivered on 30 July 2026; serial numbers indicate eight of the type received in total, and open-source counts indicate more than 1,200 drone sorties since 2022, concentrated in the Ménaka, Gao and Kidal regions. Drone strikes have also produced repeatedly documented civilian casualties, and the loss of an Akıncı to Algerian air defence in 2025 triggered a year-long diplomatic rupture. The expansion of this capability and the module’s civilian-harm file are not separate stories: they concern the same instrument.
Strengths
Armed drones give persistent reach the insurgents cannot match; unconstrained by coalition targeting rules. Fleet growth has been the one consistently upward line in the state’s military position since 2023.
Limitations
Small inventory with heavy attrition and maintenance dependence on foreign contractors; helicopter losses (including to the 2026 fighting) cut into an already thin fleet; strikes with disputed targeting carry strategic costs. Air power has also not reversed a single 2026 territorial outcome: the positions given up in April were given up despite it.

A further Akinci batch takes Mali's heavy-drone fleet to eight
Mali received a further batch of Turkish Bayraktar Akinci heavy strike drones on 30 July 2026, handed over by the deputy defence minister to the armed forces chief of staff and the head of the air force. Serial numbers reported in open sources indicate eight of the type delivered in total since November 2024, supplementing the TB2s in service since 2023. Open-source counts put Malian drone activity at more than 1,200 sorties since 2022, concentrated in the Ménaka, Gao and Kidal regions.
