Mali received a further batch of Turkish Bayraktar Akinci heavy strike drones on 30 July 2026, handed over by the deputy defence minister to the armed forces chief of staff and the head of the air force. Serial numbers reported in open sources indicate eight of the type delivered in total since November 2024, supplementing the TB2s in service since 2023. Open-source counts put Malian drone activity at more than 1,200 sorties since 2022, concentrated in the Ménaka, Gao and Kidal regions.
Why it mattersDrone capability is the one line in the Malian state's military position that has moved consistently upward since 2023, and it is also the instrument at the centre of the module's civilian-harm file — the Kyrnia strikes, the contested strikes near Tinzaouatène, and the 2025 shoot-down that ruptured relations with Algeria. Capability and conduct are the same story here, and the fleet growing while the territorial position contracts is the more exact statement of where this war stands than either fact alone.
