Broad area of activity
Europe, with a forward command post in Poland; the corps sits under US Army Europe and Africa at Wiesbaden.
Notable history
At the Madrid summit in June 2022 the United States announced that a V Corps forward command post, an Army garrison headquarters and a field support battalion would be permanently stationed in Poland — described by the State Department as the first permanently stationed US forces on NATO’s eastern flank. The corps is the one formation this tree carries beneath the theatre army, because it is the one element of US land presence on the flank that the United States has published as permanent rather than rotational.
Strengths
A permanently stationed headquarters is a different commitment from a rotation, and this is the only one of its kind on the flank.
Limitations
The permanent element is a command post and supporting units, not a corps. The rotational armoured brigade under Operation Atlantic Resolve is a separate arrangement, and neither is the NATO battlegroup Poland hosts.

Posture

Permanent structureStated by the institution

The corps' forward headquarters and a support battalion are permanently stationed in Poland — described by the State Department as the first permanently stationed US forces on NATO's eastern flank; the remainder of the corps is based in the United States. A stationing arrangement, not a disposition.

  • Which elements beyond the forward headquarters and the support battalion are stationed in Poland is not published at the resolution this record keeps.
