NATO Eastern Flank

A Watch question is not a forecast. It names the evidence that would change an assessment and records what each review found — including the reviews that found nothing moved.

Where it stands

Standing assessment

Current assessment

Moderate confidenceAs of

The United States frames the Poland formation, holds the Supreme Allied Commander Europe post and retains Allied Land Command and Allied Air Command after the February 2026 redistribution, under which the United Kingdom took Joint Force Command Norfolk on 24 September 2026.

Eight of the nine formations are framed by European allies or Canada. United States rotational units left Lithuania and Estonia in the first half of 2026 without full replacement; in September 2026 both host governments announced new rotations due in October and November. The five per cent investment commitment applies to all members.

Latest reviewNo material change3 without change

Observed

Reviewed, no material change. The first US personnel of the rotation to Lithuania were reported at Pabradė in mid-October, with two battalions due by mid-November; a rotation replacing the one that left in June is not a published US posture change. No command-post, framework or funding-share change was found.
