Notable history
Built from the Logistics Command created by presidential decree in February 2018, which merged the previously separate armament and rear services, and established as a distinct branch on 1 January 2022 — seven weeks before the full-scale invasion it then had to sustain. Its two halves survive that lineage: an armament service holding weapons, vehicles and ammunition, and a rear service holding fuel, food, materiel and signals supply, each running central directorates and the storage and repair estate beneath them. The war has made it the branch that absorbs the largest external input in Ukrainian defence — the receiving end of foreign resupply — and the one whose failures are felt everywhere at once.
Strengths
A single branch owning both armament and rear services, an integration many larger militaries have never managed; unusual practical experience in absorbing donated equipment of many incompatible patterns and keeping it running; dispersal and redundancy in the storage estate learnt under sustained strike.
Limitations
Fuel and ammunition throughput are set by decisions made outside this branch — by donors, by Ukrainian industry and by the state of the energy grid — so its ceiling is not its own; long road hauls wherever rail is interdicted; and the repair estate is a standing strike target, whose capacity rather than whose existence is the analytically interesting quantity and the one least publicly documented.
