Broad area of activity

The Donetsk oblast fronts, 2014–2022.

Notable history

The proxy corps built from 2014 around local separatist formations under de facto Russian direction, manned increasingly by forced local mobilisation in 2022. After the September 2022 annexation its structures were folded into the regular Russian military, reported as the 51st Combined Arms Army.

Strengths

Local manpower and eight years of positional-war familiarity on the Donetsk front.

Limitations

Chronically under-equipped relative to regular Russian formations; its 2022 forced mobilisation is among the war's most documented manpower abuses.

Lineage & institutional history

Formed 2014

Successors: 51st Combined Arms Army of the Russian Ground Forces (reported)
