The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant lost its main 750 kV Dniprovska connection in March 2026. Under an IAEA-brokered local ceasefire — the sixth the Agency has negotiated — the line was physically repaired in early June, and then stayed dark: the substation feeding it, more than a hundred kilometres to the north-west, had been heavily damaged by strikes in May. The plant was left on a single 330 kV line, against the ten off-site connections it had before 2022, and by 8 August had recorded its twenty-fifth complete loss of off-site power since the war began — thirteen of them since April. Its operators raised the water level in the spent-fuel pools of all six shut-down reactors to buy time in the event that diesel resupply failed during a longer outage.
Why it mattersThis is the clearest published instance of the stage of the energy war that is easiest to miss. Almost everything written about Russian strikes on Ukraine's grid is about generation — how many gigawatts have been destroyed, how much has been rebuilt. But generation that survives is only worth what the transmission between it and the consumer can carry, and a substation is far cheaper to break than a power station is. Here the sequence is documented end to end by an international agency with inspectors on both sides of the line: the line was fixed, the ceasefire held long enough for the repair, and the electricity still did not flow. It generalises. The same layer decides whether the raised European import ceiling reaches anyone, and whether the three nuclear plants still in Ukrainian hands — about half of national generation capacity — can put their output into the grid. In January 2026 one of them had already reduced power after damage to electrical infrastructure. Vigil records this as an event because it converts a general claim about winter resilience into a specific, dated, externally verified mechanism.
