What happened
In the second week of August 2025 small Russian infantry groups infiltrated some ten kilometres north-east of Pokrovsk toward Dobropillia, threatening the road to Kramatorsk; independent mapping showed a narrow salient rather than a held breach. Ukraine committed reserves including the National Guard's 1st Azov Corps and over the following weeks cut off and reduced much of the penetration, while Russian pressure on the Dobropillia direction persisted into 2026.
The clearest case on the record of the infiltration tactics the drone-saturated front produces: a deep but thin penetration that mapping first showed as a breakthrough and then as isolated groups. It set the reading this module applies to capture claims — that assessed control and claimed advance are different facts — and the Dobropillia direction remained Russia's main effort when Operation Vivaldi ended in 2026.
