In short

Taiwan's trade and its digital connectivity both run through the same maritime corridors, in waters carrying a substantial share of global container traffic. Disruption is an international shipping event before it is a Taiwanese one, which makes freight and insurance the earliest indicators.

Overview

The waters around Taiwan carry a large share of world container traffic, including much of the trade between East Asia and both Europe and North America. Taiwan's own trade is entirely seaborne or airborne, through the ports and airports on the western plain and the north-east. The same corridors carry the undersea cables through which the island's international communications run — a dependency that became visible through cable damage incidents in 2023 and 2025, in which attribution was contested in every case and established in none. The system's defining characteristic is that Taiwanese and international traffic use the same water: any measure applied to one reaches the other, and the commercial and insurance response is consequently immediate and global.

Why it matters

This system is why a Taiwan disruption would be priced in Rotterdam and Singapore within days. It also explains why the module treats war-risk insurance and freight rates as leading indicators: they respond to perceived risk faster than any political or military reporting does, and they respond whether or not anything has actually happened. The cable dimension adds a civil-resilience question that is entirely separate from shipping and has already produced real incidents.

What depends on it

Total for Taiwan and substantial for third parties. Taiwan has no land connection to anywhere, so all trade and effectively all international connectivity are maritime or airborne. For the wider economy the dependence is routing rather than absolute: shipping can go around, at a cost in days and fuel, and the cost is the exposure.

What disruption does

Disruption reaches three distinct places at once: Taiwanese trade and supply, third-party shipping schedules and costs, and — through the cables — the island's connectivity and the civil systems that depend on it. The August 2022 closure areas are the module's clearest empirical evidence of how the commercial response behaves, and it behaved quickly and without any actual interference with a vessel.

Its significance in this module is economic continuity: container throughput, energy imports and the shipping links any maritime disruption would affect first. It also sits nearest the southern approaches, where the Bashi Channel connects the strait to the open Pacific.

Its relevance here is continuity of northern maritime access, and its proximity to the East China Sea context that draws Japan into the system.

    Why it mattersTaichung shows how tightly Taiwan's chip industry and its energy system are coupled: advanced fabrication is enormously power-intensive and intolerant of interruption, and it sits in the same region as major generation. That coupling is why energy resilience is an economic-security question here, not only a civil one.

  5. The body of water separating Taiwan from mainland China — roughly 130km wide at its narrowest — and one of the most heavily transited stretches of sea in the world.

    Why it mattersThe strait is the physical centre of the system and the reason it has global weight. A very large share of world container traffic and a substantial share of LNG bound for Northeast Asia passes through or near it, which means disruption here would be an economic event for countries with no stake in the dispute. Running down the middle is the median line: an unwritten restraint observed for roughly half a century, and effectively abandoned as a limit after August 2022. Its erosion is the single clearest measure of how grey-zone pressure works — nothing was announced, and nothing was given back.

    Why it mattersThe Bashi Channel is where Taiwan's geography stops being a bilateral question. It is a principal route between the South China Sea and the open Pacific, carrying commercial traffic and undersea cables, and it is the reason the Philippines is part of this system whether or not Manila wishes to be. Its narrowness relative to the ocean either side is what gives the phrase "maritime access" concrete meaning here.

    Why it mattersThe Miyako Strait is why a Taiwan crisis is automatically a Japanese question. It is the northern counterpart to the Bashi Channel: the other place where the first island chain opens into the Pacific, and one that lies entirely within Japanese island geography. Chinese transits through it are routine, publicly reported by Japan, and legal — which is precisely what makes them a useful signalling instrument rather than an incident.

Alternatives and redundancy

Genuine for third-party shipping and negligible for Taiwan. Vessels not calling at Taiwanese ports can route east of the island or through the southern channels, adding transit time and fuel cost rather than making the voyage impossible — which is exactly why the effect of any disruption shows up as a price rather than as a stoppage. For Taiwan itself there is no alternative to arriving at its own ports. For connectivity, satellite capacity exists as a partial and much lower-bandwidth fallback, and Taiwan has publicly pursued it since the cable incidents.

  • Attribution for the cable incidents has not been established in any case; the module records the contest rather than resolving it.
  • Insurance pricing is commercially negotiated and only partially visible in published market data.

Readings the evidence also supports

  • The cable incidents can be read as deliberate grey-zone pressure or as the ordinary consequence of heavy anchor traffic in shallow, busy water, where cable damage is common worldwide. Investigations have not resolved it, and the module treats the pattern rather than any single incident as the question.
  • Commercial rerouting during exercise periods can be read as evidence of coercive effect or as routine risk management that would follow any announced restriction anywhere. Both are consistent with the observed behaviour.
