UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 recognises the PRC as the only legitimate representative of China at the United Nations, and the ROC delegation departs. Diplomatic recognition of Taipei declines steeply over the following decade.

Why it mattersThis began Taiwan's international isolation, which is a continuing instrument of pressure rather than a settled historical fact: participation in international bodies, from health to aviation, remains actively contested. Beijing and Taipei also dispute what the resolution actually determined about Taiwan's status, as opposed to China's representation.
