The Treaty of Shimonoseki ends the First Sino-Japanese War, and the Qing empire cedes Taiwan and the Penghu islands to Japan in perpetuity. Fifty years of Japanese colonial rule follow, bringing infrastructure, public health, industrial development and schooling alongside political subordination and, in the war years, forced assimilation.
Why it mattersTaiwan's separation from mainland governance begins here, in 1895 — not in 1949. That half-century of separate development is a principal reason Taiwanese political identity never mapped neatly onto Chinese nationalism, and it is routinely compressed in both claimants' narratives.
