Seytenga — civilians killed house to house near the Niger border

11 – 12 Jun 2022 Seytenga, Séno province

What happened

Overnight on 11–12 June 2022 armed men entered Seytenga, in Séno province near the Niger border, days after an attack on the town's gendarmerie post, and went from house to house killing adult men. The government's confirmed toll reached 79 on 14 June and later 86; Reuters' security source put the dead at at least 100 and a local source gave a provisional 165. UNHCR reported nearly 16,000 people fleeing, most toward Dori. The attack is attributed in reporting to the Islamic State's Sahel branch; no claim is adopted here.

One of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Burkina Faso to that date, and the one that showed the method the module later records at Barsalogho and in the Nigerien Tillabéri: an assembled or enclosed population of men killed after the local garrison has been struck. It fell in the same borderland where the Islamic State's province and JNIM both operate, and the displacement it produced went into a country whose count of the displaced stopped being updated nine months later.
