Malian Prime Minister General Abdoulaye Maïga made a two-day working visit to Algeria on 25–26 August 2026, meeting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, in the highest-level contact since the two states restored ambassadors and reopened their airspace in July. No agreement was announced. Algeria is reported to have facilitated the release of several Malian soldiers held by Tuareg rebels and jihadists; analysts cited in the reporting describe Bamako as hoping Algiers will use its influence over northern factions toward a settlement more favourable than the terminated Algiers Accord.
Why it mattersThe July reset restored ties without restoring a process, and this is the first test of whether anything follows from it. What Bamako wants from Algeria is on the record only through analysts, not through either government, and Algeria has committed to nothing publicly. The case Mali filed at the International Court of Justice over the 2025 drone incident has not been withdrawn. Recorded as an update rather than a key event because contact is not yet mediation.
