Broad area of activity
Latgale, south-eastern Latvia, whose outer edge is the Latvian frontier with Russia and Belarus; the brigade page does not draw its boundary.
Notable history
Founded on 30 June 1992 in the National Guard’s first year, reorganised into the district structure on 1 December 2003 and restored as the 3rd Latgale Brigade on 3 January 2018. Nothing in its published lineage is unusual; what makes it matter is where it is. It is the territorial formation of the region that the Latvian eastern frontier records in this module describe, and the one whose peacetime and wartime tasks overlap with the border most directly.
Strengths
A territorial brigade of local citizens in the frontier region, with six published battalions and a published peacetime role in emergency response. In this module’s terms it is the standing element between the State Border Guard and the regular brigade at Ādaži on the eastern border.
Limitations
The brigade publishes battalions, a seat and a commander and no more; strength is published and deliberately not carried, and readiness, equipment and the brigade’s relationship to the State Border Guard are not published on its page.
