In brief

The Northern Command's territorial division for the Golan Heights — the formation holding the Syrian front, whose area since December 2024 includes the buffer zone and the positions beyond it, and the IDF formation most directly party to the southern security file.

Broad area of activity
The Israeli-controlled Golan and, since December 2024, the former buffer zone and positions beyond it in Quneitra and Dara'a provinces, including the Syrian Hermon. The published description stops there; no position or line is authored.
Notable history
The Golan's territorial division since the 1970s, holding a front that was quiet for four decades under the 1974 disengagement agreement and its UN observer force. That quiet ended twice: with the Syrian war's arrival on the line after 2011, and decisively on 8 December 2024, when the IDF moved into the buffer zone and beyond it as the Assad state collapsed, took the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, and struck the former state's military assets across the country. The division's area has since been the subject of the US-mediated security negotiations of 2026 — phased withdrawal toward the 1974 lines, positions retained on the Hermon — and of the UN commission's September 2026 finding of fixed infrastructure, temporary checkpoints and cross-border detentions that Israel describes as a temporary buffer amounting to a tenth of one per cent of Syria. The prime minister's visit to the Hermon the following day, with the defence minister's statement that Israel would not leave the security zones, is the record's most recent material fact.
Strengths
Terrain, standing infrastructure and an air force above it; a front the other side has no capacity to contest militarily.
Limitations
A presence whose legal basis is contested by the UN commission, whose negotiated end is the subject of talks that have produced no signed text, and whose southern neighbours — the Sweida factions and the Damascus corps — read every movement in its area as a signal.

A civilian is killed during an Israeli night incursion in western Daraa, as the US-mediated contacts continue

Israeli forces entered Jamla in the north-western Daraa countryside shortly after midnight on the night of 21–22 October 2026; local sources told North Press the force searched homes and shot a man who was taken away as it withdrew, and civil defence teams received his body early on 22 October. Syria's Foreign Ministry held Israeli forces fully responsible, and the deputy UN special envoy deplored the killing. No Israeli military account was found. The incursion followed an advance with tanks into northern Quneitra on 20 October, and checkpoints, house searches and road closures in Quneitra were reported on 22–23 October. The US envoy met President al-Sharaa on 21 October and said two days later that he expected an eventual understanding, giving no timetable.
