Notable history
Formed on 30 June 1992 as the 1st Riga district brigade in the National Guard’s first year, it passed through the 2003 district structure and was re-established as the 1st Riga Brigade on 3 January 2018 when the National Guard returned to four regional brigades. It is the brigade whose region holds the capital, the government and the largest concentration of national security objects.
Strengths
A territorial brigade in the capital, whose published tasks include the protection of national security objects and cooperation with state institutions, with a student battalion that ties the city’s universities into the territorial force. In peacetime its battalions take part in emergency and rescue operations.
Limitations
The brigade publishes battalions, a seat and a commander and no more; strength is published and deliberately not carried, and readiness, equipment and the brigade’s wartime tasks beyond the general statement are not published.
