In brief
The armed forces of the state hosting the alliance’s first brigade-scale forward formation, described by their own site as three formations — the regular forces, the National Guard and the reserve — under a commander whose institution is the Joint Staff. Their Latvian-language units page publishes the services, the commands and the brigades; the English estate does not.

- Broad area of activity
- Latvia; host to NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia and to the forward element of Multinational Division North at Ādaži.
- Notable history
- The restored state adopted a law on compulsory military service on 10 September 1991 and took its first soldier’s oath on 11 November 1991; the National Guard, founded in August 1991, predates the regular force. Latvia reorganised its land forces into a single brigade structure from 2004, after NATO accession. The change that matters here is the reintroduction of compulsory service: the State Defence Service law adopted on 5 April 2023 reintroduced compulsory service, voluntary from July 2023 and compulsory from 1 January 2024, with conscripts serving in the regular units or for five years in the National Guard.
- Strengths
- A published three-formation model — regular forces, National Guard, reserve — with the National Guard as its largest and most territorially distributed structure, and a host relationship with the only allied brigade-scale formation on the flank. The reintroduced service feeds both the regular brigade and the National Guard, which is the mechanism by which a small professional force regains depth.
- Limitations
- The English site is thin and the structural depth lives on a Latvian-only units page, which is why P4 first recorded that Latvia publishes no regular formations. The armed forces publish no strengths by unit and no dispositions, and this tree carries four services and one regular brigade, leaving the commands named on the units page as a recorded, unauthored candidate set.
Subordinate formations
