In brief
The air service. A ministerial order approves the statutes of the Air Force and of its structural units, and the Land Force statute names it among the services the land service trains with. Its subordinate units appear in that order’s title only as a class, so none is authored; the principal-structure law names them as an air base, an airspace surveillance and control command and an air defence battalion.

- Broad area of activity
- Lithuanian airspace; the Šiauliai base is the seat of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, flown by allied detachments.
- Notable history
- The principal-structure law fixes the service’s shape as an air base, an airspace surveillance and control command and an air defence battalion, and the Seimas’s 2025 amendment gave the air defence battalion the name of Kazimieras Semenavičius. Its statute and those of its structural units are approved by one ministerial order, which is the instrument that places it under the Commander of the Armed Forces. Since 2004 the service has hosted the alliance’s Baltic Air Policing rotation at Šiauliai, the arrangement through which a service without fighters has a fighter presence.
- Strengths
- A published surveillance-and-control command feeding the allied air picture on the Kaliningrad and Belarus frontiers, an air defence battalion named in law, and the air base at which allied air policing has been based for two decades. Airspace surveillance is the function that matters most on this ground and it is the one Lithuania organises as a command.
- Limitations
- The service publishes no combat aircraft; the fighters over Lithuania are allied rotations under NATO direction with national command retained by the framework nations. The register names the service’s units only as a class in the order’s title, so this branch ends at the service, and nothing about systems, quantities or readiness is carried.
