The United States' membership of NATO, in force since 4 April 1949 as a founding signatory. Membership is a treaty fact rather than an assessment of alignment. The United States frames the battlegroup in Poland and has held the SACEUR appointment continuously.
NATO and the eastern flank has as a member The United States and the eastern flank. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.
The arrangement
- Status
- ActiveIn force and operating. Says nothing about how well it is working, or about which way it is heading.
- What it covers
- DefenceInstitutionalLegal and treatyCategories the arrangement is documented to include. Not a measure: a relationship covering more of them is described in more detail, not held more firmly.
Summary
One of the twelve states that signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington on 4 April 1949, so its membership is not an accession but the treaty itself. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. The United States frames the battlegroup in Poland and has held the Supreme Allied Commander Europe appointment continuously. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.
Why it matters
The membership set is the backbone of this module: every forward deployment, every command arrangement and every reinforcement plan in the theatre exists because of who is inside this treaty and who is not. Reading the accession dates in order also explains the theatre's shape — the states that joined in 1999 and 2004 are the ones the forward presence now sits in, and the two newest accessions closed the Baltic and the northern land border.

What remains unknown
- The United States’ March 2026 posture testimony states that Europe must assume primary responsibility for its own conventional defence while the United States remains committed to Article 5 and to NATO; that is a stated position, carried on the actor’s posture block, and membership does not grade it.
- US force levels in Europe are not carried anywhere in this module from a source read; the SACEUR appointment’s continuity is the one contribution fact membership establishes.
