Broad area of activity
Lebanon south of the Litani river, between the river and the Blue Line, described at strategic scale only; its brigades are not separate records.
Notable history
The November 2024 cessation of hostilities (S/2024/870) placed only official forces in the area south of the Litani and set a US- and French-supported target of a 10,000-strong army deployment there. The Council of Ministers tasked the army on 5 August 2025 with a plan to confine arms to the state and welcomed its phased plan on 5 September; on 8 January 2026 the army declared that the plan's first phase, the sector's task, had achieved its objectives and that it held operational control south of the Litani except for the areas Israel still occupied. During the 2026 war the army repositioned and temporarily withdrew from areas near the Blue Line while keeping some presence south of the river (UN). Under the 26 June 2026 Trilateral Framework, pilot zones under the army's exclusive control became the vehicle for Israeli redeployment, and press reported the first pilot-zone deployment in July 2026.
Strengths
The one Lebanese military command whose task every instrument since November 2024 defines first, with a declared first phase complete and a coordination channel with Israel through the United States.
Limitations
Its strength, brigades and positions are not published and none is recorded; the army's phase reports to Cabinet are secret, and the January 2026 declaration is the army's own, not independently verified. Israeli forces hold ground inside its area on the forward defence line, and UNIFIL, which works alongside it, ceases operations on 31 December 2026.
