Battlefield role

The backbone of Ukraine's tank fleet — the tank Ukraine inherited, builds knowledge around, and overhauls domestically.

Strengths

Locally supported by the Kharkiv plant that designed it; 2017/2022 modernisations added modern optics; familiar to a generation of Ukrainian crews.

Limitations

Same crew-compartment carousel autoloader vulnerability as the T-72 family; aging fleet with finite hulls; maintenance-intensive engine.

Visual identification

Six small, closely spaced stamped road wheels (vs the T-72's larger ones); distinctive boxy ERA arrangement on the turret front; prominent gill-type side skirts on some vehicles.

Documented conflict use

In continuous documented combat use since 2014 and throughout the full-scale war as Ukraine's most numerous tank type.
