Broad area of activity
Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as an intelligence and internal-security agency rather than a force; described at institutional scale only.
Notable history
The General Security Service answers to the Prime Minister's Office rather than the Defence Ministry and holds the counter-terrorism intelligence file in the West Bank and Gaza. It announced Operation Iron Wall with the IDF and the Border Police on 21 January 2025, and interrogation and targeting intelligence are the part of the Gaza war the IDF attributes to it. Its own failure before 7 October 2023 was examined alongside the IDF's, and the government's attempt in 2025 to dismiss its director became a dispute before the Supreme Court before the director's departure.
Strengths
A standing agency with statutory authority inside Israel and in the territories, a decades-long human-intelligence base in the West Bank, and the institutional partner the IDF names in every announced West Bank operation.
Limitations
An intelligence service's structure, strength and methods are not published and none is recorded; the record is confined to its statutory position and the operations it has publicly co-announced. The 2025 dispute over its leadership is recorded as a fact about the institution, not assessed.
