Broad area of activity
The Gaza perimeter and, since October 2023, the Strip alongside the manoeuvre divisions rotated through it; described at strategic scale only.
Notable history
The 143rd Division has held the Gaza border since the 2005 disengagement, behind the barrier the Defense Ministry declared complete in December 2021. On 7 October 2023 it held the perimeter when the Hamas-led attack broke through it in several places; the IDF's October 7 probes, completed in February 2025, placed the failure in assessment, warning and planning rather than in one unit, and the external panel of November 2025 assessed that the Southern Command had failed to give early warning or secure residents. IDF releases of February 2025 named it among the divisions deployed in Gaza. Since the ceasefire of 10 October 2025 the Southern Command's forces have held the Yellow Line inside the Strip.
Strengths
The standing formation of the Gaza front, with the perimeter and the border infrastructure as its permanent responsibility while manoeuvre divisions rotate, and the one division whose October 2023 record has been examined in public by its own institution.
Limitations
Its defining failure is the breach of 7 October 2023, which the probes attribute to the system above it as much as to the division. No strength, brigades, positions or current deployment are published or recorded, and the Yellow Line is described from the Southern Command's record.
