Broad area of activity
The Israel–Lebanon border and, during the ground operations of 2024 and 2026, south Lebanon; described at strategic scale only.
Notable history
The Galilee Division held the Lebanese border through the year of cross-border fire that Hezbollah opened on 8 October 2023, in which communities on both sides of the Blue Line were evacuated. According to IDF statements it began operations inside Lebanon in early October 2024, in the ground operation that followed the Northern Arrows campaign, and in the 2026 war the IDF named it as opening the ground operation in mid-March 2026. After the June 2026 ceasefire Israeli forces remained north of the Blue Line on the forward defence line the IDF had declared in April.
Strengths
The standing territorial formation of the Lebanon front, with the sector knowledge of a year of border fire and the lead role in both ground operations, and the formation the reinforcing manoeuvre and reserve divisions have joined rather than replaced.
Limitations
A territorial division's holding of a border is a fact about the IDF's structure, not a claim about where its forces are: no positions, strength, brigades or current deployment are published or recorded, and the forward defence line is described from the Secretary-General's reports, not from the division's record.
