Weekly review / event-driven updates

Context, not targeting. This atlas describes structure and history. It deliberately excludes current locations, live strength, unit movements and anything operationally sensitive — the content model has no fields for them. Branch depth reflects what can be established from public sources, not the size, capability or importance of a force: a thin branch means a state publishes little, and record counts are never a measure of strength.

Israel

Israel Defense Forces

Israel's unified military, and the force present in every arena of this system: the Gaza war since October 2023, the Lebanon fronts of 2023–24 and 2026, and sustained operations in the West Bank.

As of 2026-09

Israel

IDF Northern Command

The IDF regional command for the Lebanese and Syrian fronts. In this module, the command that fought Hezbollah in 2023–24 and again in 2026, and that holds the area the UN calls the forward defence line.

As of 2026-06

Israel

Levant commands and formations (Israel Defense Forces)

A navigation grouping of the IDF commands and formations this module reads on the Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon fronts. It is not an IDF echelon and implies no command of its own: the formal parent of each member differs and is stated on its own record.

As of 2026-10

Israel

Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet)

Israel's internal security service, answering to the Prime Minister's Office: the lead agency for counter-terrorism intelligence in the West Bank and a central intelligence partner to the IDF in Gaza.

As of 2026-10

Lebanese state

Lebanese Armed Forces

Lebanon's armed forces under a single Army Command, which commands the land forces, the Air Force and the Navy. The force the state has tasked, since August 2025, with confining arms to the state, beginning south of the Litani.

As of 2026-10

Palestinian Authority

Palestinian Authority Security Forces

The security services of the Palestinian Authority, organised by law since 2005 in three forces — national security, internal security and general intelligence — under the President as commander-in-chief. They operate in the parts of the West Bank the Authority administers and have not operated in Gaza since 2007.

As of 2026-10

Political-armed organisations

Hezbollah's military organisation

The armed organisation of Hezbollah — banned from military and security activity by the Lebanese cabinet on 2 March 2026, yet a combatant in the war that opened that day. Its existence and its fighting in 2026 are confirmed; its internal form after the 2024 decapitation and a reported reorganisation into smaller units, with Iranian help, is not.

As of 2026-10

Political-armed organisations

Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades

Hamas's armed wing and the principal armed organisation in Gaza — party, through Hamas, to the Board of Peace disarmament document of 30 July 2026, whose implementation is not confirmed. Its pre-war structure is documented and historical; its present structure is unknown.

As of 2026-10

Political-armed organisations

al-Quds Brigades (Palestinian Islamic Jihad)

The armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the second armed organisation in Gaza — considerably weakened by the war, with reservations about the July 2026 disarmament document. Its internal structure is not established by any independent source.

As of 2026-08

International bodies

United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)

The UN peacekeeping force in south Lebanon, organised in Sector West and Sector East under a headquarters at Naqoura with a maritime task force, whose operations cease on 31 December 2026 under resolution 2790 (2025), with withdrawal to follow within one year.

As of 2026-10

International bodies

Mechanism (2024 cessation of hostilities)

The US-chaired body created by the November 2024 Israel–Lebanon cessation of hostilities (S/2024/870) to monitor, verify and assist enforcement, with Lebanon, Israel, UNIFIL as host and France. Its meetings were suspended from 18 March 2026 (UN); its status since is uncertain.

Status uncertain As of 2026-10

International bodies

Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L)

The trilateral military coordination group created under Article 7 of the 26 June 2026 US–Israel–Lebanon Trilateral Framework, "with U.S. support and participation", to ensure the Framework's implementation. Its composition beyond the three signatories is not published.

How to read this atlasRecord states, subordination grades and lineage — and the dated structural changes this module's records and corrections carry

How to read this atlas

Structure. Each side is a set of trees: state military, interior forces, and browsing groups. A record marked “Grouping · not a command” exists only so related organisations can be found together — its members do not share a command, and each states its real parent institution.

Record states. A full profile has passed source review. A stub is an honest structural placeholder — name, place in the tree, broad role, and a dated status — awaiting research. Records that cannot yet meet even that threshold are held internally and do not appear on the site at all.

Subordination grades. Parent links are graded:confirmed, reported, disputed, historical, or unknown. Where a current parent cannot be verified — as with brigades amid Ukraine's rolling corps reform — the record says unknown rather than inventing precision.

Lineage, not amnesia. Reorganised, merged or disbanded organisations keep their records, marked with dated predecessor and successor links — Wagner's absorption after 2023 and the Donetsk and Luhansk corps are carried this way, never as if unchanged.

Every record carries a status as of date for its claims and a separate reviewed date for editorial checks — a review never silently refreshes a status date.

Recent structural changes

Dated changes the records in this module state about themselves, and the corrections the public log records against this atlas — newest first.

2026-10-15Correction

A REPORT RECORDED AS SAYING MORE THAN IT SAID. The record said Reuters had reported Quds Force officers auditing and taking direct supervision of Hezbollah's military organisation. The Reuters report of 21 March 2026 names the Revolutionary Guard, not the Quds Force, and its supervision claim rests on one anonymous source. The record now says so, and sets it beside the two further investigations (Le Figaro, Middle East Eye) that report Iranian help with the command and disagree on who authored the move to smaller units. Two further statements were corrected: Hezbollah confirmed the death of the man Israel called its chief of staff in November 2025 but not his office, and the offices widely attached to the commanders killed in 2024 are Hezbollah's own only for a few of them; the rest are Israeli attributions. The Radwan Force record said everything about the force after 2024 came from Israeli sources; in May 2026 a source close to Hezbollah also named an operations commander of the force.

2026-07-30Posture changeIzz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades

Hamas and other factions approved the Board of Peace disarmament document of 30 July 2026, a roadmap in which a national committee would inventory and store weapons under international verification, tied to Israeli withdrawal. A Hamas official said it would not be implemented if Israel failed its obligations; implementation is not confirmed.

2026-07Posture changeLebanese Armed Forces

Press reported the army's first deployment into pilot zones under its exclusive control, the vehicle the 26 June 2026 Trilateral Framework makes for Israeli redeployment, coordinated through the Military Coordination Group for Lebanon.

Created under Article 7 of the US–Israel–Lebanon Trilateral Framework signed in Washington on 26 June 2026, "with U.S. support and participation", to ensure the Framework's implementation; its composition beyond the three signatories is not published.

2026-05-15Command changeIzz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades

Israel killed the armed wing's commander in a strike on Gaza City on 15 May 2026, and Hamas confirmed his death the next day. Succession since is not published.

2026-03-02ChangeLebanese Armed Forces

The Cabinet ordered the army to begin the north-of-Litani part of its plan at once and to prevent launches and arrest violators under the ban on Hezbollah's military activity. In the war that followed the army repositioned and temporarily withdrew from areas near the Blue Line while keeping some presence south of the Litani (UN).

The Lebanese cabinet banned Hezbollah's military and security activity as unlawful on the day it opened fire on Israel, confining the party to political work and ordering the army and security agencies to prevent launches and arrest violators. The ban changed the organisation's legal standing in Lebanon; how far it has been implemented is not independently established.

2026-01-08Posture changeLebanese Armed Forces

The army stated that the first phase of its plan to confine arms to the state had achieved its objectives and that it held operational control south of the Litani except for areas still occupied by Israel; the Cabinet asked for a plan for north of the river. The declaration is the army's own and the plan's content is secret.

2025-11-23Command changeHezbollah's military organisation

Israel said it had killed the organisation's chief of staff in Beirut; Hezbollah confirmed the death without stating his office. The Israeli identification of the post is the IDF's claim.

Resolution 2790 (2025) extended the mandate "for a final time" to 31 December 2026, requested UNIFIL to cease its operations on that date and, within one year from it, to draw down and withdraw, with the Government of Lebanon as the sole provider of security in southern Lebanon. No successor arrangement has been decided.

2024-11-27Posture changeLebanese Armed Forces

The cessation of hostilities (S/2024/870) placed only official forces in the area south of the Litani, tasked them to dismantle unauthorised infrastructure and confiscate unauthorised arms starting there, and set a US- and French-supported target of a 10,000-strong deployment in the south; the caretaker cabinet funded the recruitment of 1,500 soldiers that month.

Between July and October 2024 Israel killed two Secretaries-General in succession and the senior military figures whose deaths Hezbollah confirmed, after the pager and radio attacks of 17–18 September; Naim Qassem was elected Secretary-General on 29 October 2024. Hezbollah has named no successor to any military post.

2017-08-14Re-equippedLebanese Armed Forces

The first eight of 32 M2A2 Bradley fighting vehicles ordered under US security assistance, with M992 ammunition carriers, were handed to the army at the Port of Beirut; the order was valued at more than $100m and later batches followed, supplementing the M113 carriers that form the bulk of its armoured units.
