Zone d’activité générale
Peacetime: Rostov oblast, from Novocherkassk. Wartime: the Donetsk axis — Mariupol in 2022, the Donetsk-city sectors since — by ISW's tracking. No current disposition is authored.
Historique notable
A Soviet army with a Stalingrad lineage, disbanded in 1998 and re-formed in 2017 at Novocherkassk as the field army for the Donbas border, around a motor-rifle division re-established there in 2016 — a structural signal, five years before the invasion, of where Russia expected to fight. In 2022 it was the army most associated with the Donetsk axis, including the Mariupol operation, and after the September annexations the two former separatist corps were folded under its structures, which made it briefly the largest army in the theatre; the corps were reported detached as armies of their own in 2024. It has held the Donetsk-city sectors since.
Points forts
Continuous theatre familiarity on the axis Russia has prioritised since 2022, a garrison on the border itself, and the manpower the integrated corps brought.
Limites
Years of attritional fighting on the most heavily defended axis; the integration of former separatist formations brought quality and equipment disparities the army had to absorb; nothing below the army is authored.
