The operational alignment between the al-Qaeda-aligned coalition and the Azawad separatist front since April 2026: coordinated offensives that took Kidal, a documented joint ambush in July, a reported joint withdrawal in October, and no public characterisation of the relationship by either party.
Un arrangement symétrique : il se lit de la même façon des deux côtés. Rédigé une seule fois, sur une seule fiche.

Synthèse
The two organisations fought each other through the 2010s and were on the same side of one battle before they were on the same side of a war: at Tinzaouatène in July 2024 the CSP routed a Malian–Wagner column and JNIM claimed a role, a contested signal of convergence that the Front's formation that November did not confirm. What changed in 2026 was open coordination. On 25 April the Front and JNIM launched the largest coordinated offensive since 2012, reported as the first time the two openly coordinated operations; the Front took Kidal as government and Russian forces withdrew, and JNIM reimposed its blockade of Bamako three days later. In July both fought around Anéfis, and the 18 July ambush of the army and Africa Corps convoy returning from Anéfis to Gao — near Tabankort in the wire services' account, near Tabrichat village in Human Rights Watch's — was claimed by both and is now documented from the parties' own statements: both replied in writing to Human Rights Watch about the execution of at least 19 surrendered soldiers after it, JNIM's sharia committee (30 September) saying the killings took place but were not ordered and the Front (20 September) rejecting that its forces executed anyone — the first public divergence between the partners, over conduct rather than over the alliance. On 6 October the Front withdrew from Kidal under air pressure and one of its cadres told RFI the decision was taken with JNIM, which did not fight for the town. Neither organisation has described the relationship in its own channels; no joint statement, joint command or governing arrangement for a shared area is public; and no clash between the two has been documented since the Front was formed. The record therefore states coordination, dated three times, and nothing about its terms.
Pourquoi c’est important
Together the two organisations took the north in a season; apart, each is the other's problem in the same terrain. Their objectives — religious rule and self-determination — have never been reconciled in public, so whether the alignment holds is a political question the module watches through administration rather than battle, and it is the single variable on which the northern war's shape most depends.

Lieux

Ce qui reste inconnu
- Neither organisation has affirmed, defined or repudiated the alignment in its own channels; what is public is operations described as coordinated by reporters and, for July 2026, by the parties' replies to a third party.
- Whether a joint command, a division of labour by geography or a case-by-case arrangement lies behind the coordination is not established; the record uses "alignment" for that reason and not "alliance".
- Governance in areas the Front holds — administration, taxation, religious-law enforcement — is reported only thinly, and friction there, where the two organisations' objectives would collide, may not be visible from outside.
- Vigil publishes no strength, disposition or area-of-control claim for either party.
Lectures que les éléments permettent aussi
- The alignment can be read as a durable strategic realignment of the northern war or as a temporary convergence against a shared enemy that breaks over governing arrangements; the Watch question treats the second as at least as likely and the record asserts neither.
- A division of labour by geography would produce the same evidence — coordinated timing, no documented friction — without the two ever sharing a town, and nothing in the record excludes it.
