Danish waters and the straits, the waters of Greenland and the Faroe Islands — where the Navy states it is present with ships throughout the year under Joint Arctic Command — and worldwide deployment when called for, which the service illustrates with anti-piracy, chemical-weapons removal and carrier-group participation.
Historique notable
The Navy’s published structure is a single Navy Command with a national maritime operations centre and four squadrons at two bases, a shape built for a small navy with two very different seas to serve. The structural story of this module is that the straits it holds became the Baltic’s only exits from an allied sea once Finland and Sweden acceded, and that the 2024–2033 agreement, published in Danish, is rebuilding the anti-submarine capability the Baltic approaches and the Greenland– Iceland gap both require.
Points forts
Position at both chokepoints. A navy that stands at the Baltic’s entrances and, through the Arctic command, in the Greenland and Faroes waters is present at the two places where the alliance’s northern maritime geography narrows, and it publishes the operations centre from which it does so.
Limites
Small, and mid-programme. The Navy publishes squadrons as a count, no vessel list by unit and no readiness; the agreement’s anti-submarine and fleet measures are plans with published target years, not delivered structure; and the Arctic presence is described by the Navy in terms of ship types through the year, which this record does not enumerate.
