Branch
National Guard of Mali
Territorial and camel-corps force with a defence-ministry mandate — historically the state’s presence in the deep north.
GovernmentInterior / securityTerritorial security, rural garrisons and desert units
Broad area of activity
Garrison network nationwide, including the méhariste (camel corps) tradition in the northern regions.
Notable history
Descended from colonial-era Goumiers, the Guard has long been the state’s thinnest but most persistent northern presence, recruiting locally where the regular army could not. Its posts have absorbed many of the war’s first blows — from the 2012 rebellion to the garrison attacks of 2023–2026.
Strengths
Local recruitment and desert mobility tradition.
Limitations
Dispersed small posts are the most exposed targets in the war; equipment and manning lag the army.
