Ansar Dine
Iyad Ag Ghaly’s movement of the 2012 war — jihadist co-belligerent of the MNLA rebellion, then its expeller; merged into JNIM in 2017.
Broad area of activity
Kidal region and the north, 2012–2017.
Notable history
Founded by Iyad Ag Ghaly after the Ifoghas leadership passed him over, Ansar Dine rode the 2012 rebellion alongside the MNLA, then turned on it and imposed jihadist rule on the north. Driven from the cities by Serval, it persisted in the Adrar des Ifoghas and became the senior partner in the 2017 JNIM merger — its leader has run the coalition ever since.
Strengths
Ag Ghaly’s unmatched networks across both jihadist and Tuareg-notable worlds.
Limitations
Superseded by its own success — the brand dissolved into JNIM.
Lineage & institutional history
Successors: JNIM — Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims
Key events
Jihadist takeover of the north
Ansar Dine, AQIM and MUJAO turn on and expel the MNLA from Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal, imposing their rule on the northern cities — destroying shrines in Timbuktu and applying hudud punishments.
