Zone d’activité générale
Norway’s land, sea and air territory and Norwegian forces abroad. The headquarters states that it monitors the country’s territory continuously with radars, the Coast Guard and maritime surveillance aircraft, fuses the result into one situational picture and shares it across the armed forces and with NATO.
Historique notable
Norway runs its operations from a single joint headquarters inside a mountain complex at Reitan, whose chief is published as the Chief of Defence’s principal adviser on operations. Its published tasks — sovereignty and presence, crisis response, planning and conducting the major allied exercises in the north, and coordinating total defence with municipalities, hospitals and other civilian partners — make it the institution through which the High North is actually managed in peacetime, and the one whose shared picture the alliance’s northern structures at Bodø and Mikkeli, recorded elsewhere in this module, draw on.
Points forts
It exists, it is national, and it is published. A standing joint command that already fuses surveillance into a picture shared with the alliance, and that holds the total-defence coordination role in its own hands, is the reason Norway’s northern flank has a peacetime owner rather than a plan.
Limites
The command is national and its authority over allied forces in Norway is not described on its pages; nothing here converts it into a NATO command. What it watches, how, and what it sees are dispositions and intelligence and are not carried. Its published pages are years old, and only what they share is used.
