- Zone d’activité générale
- A publicly stated area of responsibility covering Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom and, since December 2025, Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
- Historique notable
- Decided by NATO defence ministers in June 2018 as one of the two commands of that year's adaptation, established in July 2019, at initial capability in September 2020 and declared fully operational on 15 July 2021 — NATO called it the first headquarters dedicated to the Atlantic since 2003 and the only operational NATO command in North America, with a mission to protect the strategic lines of communication and enable the reinforcement of Europe. In December 2025 SACEUR updated the geographic boundaries used to coordinate allied military activity, adding the three Nordic allies to its area; in February 2026 the North Atlantic Council agreed that the United Kingdom would take over its command.
- Points forts
- It is the one joint force command that publishes its own area of responsibility, which makes the northern half of this theatre legible in a way the rest of the command structure is not; and its mission — the sea lines between North America and Europe — is the reinforcement problem the enabling command at Ulm picks up on the European shore.
- Limites
- A published area of responsibility is NOT ownership of a regional defence plan, a boundary of military control, or command over the formations inside that geography. Those are separate claims and none of them is established by this one. Its staff was published as 150 from 21 nations at full capability in 2021, which is small for the geography it now covers.
