- Lago Patria, Italy. NATO says it takes a 360-degree approach across its area of responsibility; the boundary of that area is not published on the pages read, and the Romanian and Bulgarian battlegroups are the part of it this module concerns.
- Historique notable
- Activated in March 2004 from Allied Forces Southern Europe, which dated from 1951, as part of the 2002 Prague reorganisation of the command structure by function. NATO's 2015 announcement of the Bucharest divisional headquarters named this command as its operational-control authority, and the Sibiu corps formed in 2020 publishes a chart running SHAPE — JFC Naples — LANDCOM above itself. In February 2026 the North Atlantic Council agreed that Italy would take over its command, to be implemented with the scheduled rotation of personnel.
- Points forts
- It is the joint-level headquarters nearest the south-eastern flank and the one the Romanian-hosted corps and division both publish as their superior. NATO describes its remit as supporting ongoing missions, managing multinational battlegroups, enhanced air policing and the Western Balkans liaison offices, so the Black Sea end of this theatre is read at a command that also carries the alliance's southern missions.
- Limites
- The 2015 operational-control statement concerned a headquarters, not forces: the battlegroups in Romania and Bulgaria remain national contributions, and NATO's current page describes the corps and division as covering them, not commanding them. The command's own site is closed to tools, so its own account of its area and of its part in Eastern Sentry is not carried here.
