Allgemeines Tätigkeitsfeld
Latvia’s territorial and internal waters and exclusive economic zone, from Liepāja; the Gulf of Riga approach is its published area of surveillance and control.
Bemerkenswerte Geschichte
The service’s published tasks are the readiness of its units, the surveillance and control of the territorial waters and the economic zone, the neutralisation of explosive hazards at sea, preparation of personnel for NATO and EU operations and the coast guard functions of search and rescue, pollution response and navigation oversight. Its formative multinational step was the Baltic Naval Squadron, BALTRON, created in August 1998 to keep the three Baltic navies at mine countermeasures readiness together; the service now contributes to NATO’s Standing Mine Countermeasures Group 1.
Stärken
Coast guard and navy in one service, which gives a small fleet a continuous peacetime presence at sea and a single chain for maritime surveillance, and a mine-countermeasures specialism with a three-decade multinational habit. On the Gulf of Riga approach the relevant capability is keeping the approach open, and that is what the published structure is organised around.
Einschränkungen
The published structure stops at squadron; vessels, numbers and readiness are not carried. The specialised coastal defence battalion is named and no more is published about it, so what the service can do from the shore is not established from official sources.
